just found this in the IBF site, it is a new rule for singles player t-shirt color. to be implemented in January 2004.

    19.3 Singles matches

Each player must wear, as far as colour and design is concerned, shirts and shorts (or equivalent articles of clothing) in accordance with Regulations 19.3.1 to 19.3.10.

19.3.1 In International events, the colour of clothing is optional.

19.3.2 In Continental Circuit events, the colour of clothing is optional or dependent on the Continental Confederation’s regulations.

19.3.3 In Open events, excluding World Grand Prix events, it is recommended that
from the quarter finals onwards, the opposing players in each match wear different
    colours from each other.

19.3.4 In World Grand Prix events, it is recommended that, from the quarter finals
onwards, the opposing players in each match wear different colours from each
    other.

19.3.5 In World Championships, it is recommended that, from the quarter finals
onwards, the opposing players in each match wear different colours from each
    other.

19.3.6 In World Junior Championships, it is recommended that, from the semi-finals
onwards, the opposing players in each match wear different colours from each
    other.

19.3.7 In Thomas & Uber Cups, it is recommended that the opposing players in each
match wear different colours from each other.

19.3.8 In Sudirman Cup, it is recommended that the opposing players in each match
wear different colours from each other.

19.3.9 In World Junior Team Championships, it is recommended that the opposing
players in each match wear different colours from each other.

19.3.10 In Olympic Games, it is mandatory for the opposing players in each match to
wear different colours from each other. Preferred colours of shirts need to be
    registered before the Games.

Explanation: To bring the regulations for players in singles matches into line
with those for players in doubles matches

    Implementation: 1 January 2004

    so basically, to summarize.

for all team events, opposing teams needs to wear different color clothing.

for all individual events, they need to wear different color clothing after the quarter/semi final. good for TV i guess.

the above are all recommended. so probably little they can do if players don't have a shirt.

the most strict is the Olympics, in every match, it is mandatory that the shirts are different colored and probably will be somebody's full tme job just to make sure that players are wearing different color shirts...

    Hmmm...

Just wondering, if the 2 finalists got the same preference on their jersey colors, who will have the priority over the other? Depend on seniority or world ranking?

Also, question about double matches. Is there also sort of regulation on jerseys? Seems most badminton double pairs wearing same jersey, but in table tennis, 2 players can wear totally different ones...

Are these rules made so the crowd can tell the difference between the players or is there some other reason?
