From time to time there are people on Reddit mentioning one sign up issue or another.

The original issue was google changing some security settings preventing sign ups. That was resolved but it let in particularly vicious spambots spamming multiple users message boxes. Therefore the new registration was turned off. Not sure of the current situation.
