Expected semis match-up between Malaysia and Indonesia on 7/12/2003: 1st singles: Wong CH vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro - An exciting opening match. Will be a touch-and-go encounter but based on surrent form, Wong CH should give Malaysia a headstart. 1st doubles: Choong/Lee vs Luluk/Alven - Choong/Lee will win. 2nd singles: Roslin Hashim vs Simon Santoso - Another potential close match. Simon has scalped several big names this year and Roslin could be his next victim if he takes it easy. A 50-50 match. 2nd doubles: Chew/Chang vs Markis/Hendra - Both are weak pairs. So, also a 50-50 match. 3rd singles: Lee TS vs Wimpie - Skill and experience wise, Lee TS is far ahead but his match temperament is a big question mark. However, judging on his past team event record, Lee TS could rise to the occasion. Prediction: Malaysia should win with 3-2 score. Wong CH's victory will virtually seal the tie for Malaysia.
IMO, this tournament is an excellent grounding to give the up and coming players experience of an International team competition. PBSI may be looking to the future and this is a relatively less prestigious team tournament. Next year, there is Thomas cup and the Olympics. These younger players may be needed in the TC. The older players may be concentrating on gaining points for the Olympics.
Men's team Semi Final INA lead MAS 1-0 Sony Dwi Kuncoro bt Wong Choong Han 15-10 15-7 Luluk Hadiyanto/ Alvent Yulianto lead Choong/Lee 15-12 5-0 Choong/Lee lead 12-5 in 1st game but lost in 12-15
Simon Santoso won over Roslin in 3 games. The first game was won by Simon. Can't remember the score (sth like 15-8?). I didn't watch it though. The second was very close; Simon led 14-11, but lost to Roslin 14-17 in the end. Simon led 12-7 in the third, but Roslin caught up to 12-11. Eventually Simon won 15-11. The last rally was amazing with some luck on Simon's side. The shuttle caught the net and went over, Roslin dived and managed to get it back, but not the second time when Simon spinned the shuttle and it just landed on the other side of the court while Roslin was still lying on the floor. Both players throwed the rackets after the point and I think I saw Roslin sobbing. Well, that was the only match I watched on Vietnamese Channel VTV3, Satellite Measat1. I guess Indonesia won the tie 3-0 already! No idea about the broadcast schedule, so have to depend on pure luck!
