Aside from the Big 3 of course. There are companies like Yonex that develop and produce their own racquets, and there are others like Adidas (RIP) that outsource to an OEM. What are the other companies that make their own stuff in-house? Or at the very least do their own R&D?

OEM means a brand essentially uses a already R&D'ed design and only make small customization.

It is not correct to say that Adidas don't do their own R&D. They do do their own R&D and contract out the manufacturing to factory in China. As you can see, Adidas has very unique design that is not available ready made from OEM.

What was so special about Adidas back when they were still in business?

Paint quality are good enough. My P8 clash few times yet it still beautifull white.
Durability, so far still survive clash & drop.

Cant say about performance as its very personal but one thing i can say about P8, its great racket for me.

The only thing that bad from Adidas are their Marketing. All their gold look like bronze, unpromising & almost no one know or willing to try, yet Yonex are to good at Marketing showing their silver as if its a gold.
