Good point. I, too, wonder why he is not being given more opportunities to participate in international tournaments. Ranking-wise, Watanabe Koki is very close to Momota, and the argument of fielding only Team A players doesn't hold up in Super 300 tournaments (according to NBA regulations). Having said that, Japanese players joining this tournament are doing so on a self-financed basis;... maybe he does not have the resources. His next appearance is scheduled to be at the Canada Open.
A whole range, including football, baseball, rugby, athletics, judo, figure-skating, etc., etc. Badminton is largely regarded as a minor sport, and is relatively dependent on Government funding. Unfortunately, Government largesse has been cut by 20% as of this year as a form of punishment for various financial indiscretions by NBA employees.
Volleyball too maybe ? Coz I see Nishida and other players being great at it. How’s the craze there ?
Volleyball is definitely a cut above badminton as far as a fan base is concerned. Women's volleyball used to be more popular, due to its Olympic success, but Ishikawa Yuki changed all of that. Interestingly, Nishida's employer, JTEKT, also employs Nishimoto. They are both active in Kariya, which is where I live.
This is a side note, but is Sumo organisation managing on their own. At least they don't have many hotel days abroad..
I don't know if they are b or c team, but I have seen the following Japan players playing very well: Koga, Obayashi, Takahashi, Hatano and Tanaka.
Nah. They may not have many overseas bouts, but you would be surprised how much travel is required in Japan. The sponsor list is quite extensive, and available at 令和五年七月場所パートナーズ - 日本相撲協会公式サイト (sumo.or.jp). Moreover, the set-up is rather unique. Each sponsor is required to pay for at least one banner for each day of a tournament (approx. 60,000 JPY). There are six tournaments per year, and they all last 14 days. Just to give you a visual idea, this is what the banners look like:
Koga Minoru has been dropped from the national team, but all other players are on the B Team (there is no C Team). Watch out for Obayashi and maybe also for a newcomer to the B Team, Muramoto Ryoma. Muramoto performed surprisingly well at the All Japan Championships last year, possibly due to the practice that he is getting with Nishimoto at JTEKT.
Good enough defence. But lacks speed and power, can't retrieve as many shots as his playing style demands and can't finish a rally to save his life. It's not uncommon for juniors to lose a physical battle, but this seems like a common trend in both Indian MS and WS. Kiran George showed some promise really hope it wasn't a one lucky tournament. Also what's up with Garaga, he was not half bad in Jr days when he played with Satwik. They can't even go past an unknown USA duo? Need to change partner? Is Ishan back from injury? I am not a fan of him (no power whatsoever) but can be worthwhile to mix and match while they are still young.
Mantu playing well . 3 setter with CTC , about time he steps up . This year is probs his last chance at realising his potential . 24 already , after 25 no one really improves .
