LazyBuddy suggested a poll on who will win the next TC/UC. as the next TC/UC is still 1.5 years away, we think it will be more fitting to post a poll on who will win the next Sudirman Cup, which happens in March 2003. so here we go and thanks LB for the suggestion....
Yes, Malaysia will participate but since Malaysia is not in the top group -- Malaysian women players are weak -- Malaysia is not eligible to win the cup. Ron
Agree. It's more like a overall competition than individual events. If teams have obivious weak spots, they will surely pay for the price. However, never know whether Ma's has any secret weapon or not. If China's troubled MD can upset world #2 pair, who knows what Ma's women team can do in the cup... Well, I suggest to count them in.
LB, but they are not eligible at all to win the cup this year. only group 1 countries are eligible for the cup. the 6 group 1 countries are listed in the poll. MA is in group 2. the best they can do is to be promoted to group 1 for next year.
Yes, that was what I said, Malaysia is not in the top group and therefore not eligible to win the cup. If Malaysia tops group 2, they then get promoted to the top group and become eligible to win the cup. Malaysia's team is somewhat unbalanced -- very strong for the men and somewhat mediocre for the women. China is probably the best bet because they are strong in both men and women. Denmark has Camilia but she is the only strong Danish woman player. Korea has excellent mixed doubles and women's doubles and has a long shot. Ron
i'm surprised that no one has voted for indonesia so far while i think that it's denmark's year, indonesia does has to potential to steel the title (if only their mixed doubles could perform better)
Indonesia has a shaky MX as you have said. they do have strong MD and MS, but very weak on the women's events just like Malaysia. as i have mentioned, the MX is the key event to winning the SC. as it was 2 years ago. for an analysis of the 2003 Sudirman Cup, look at this thread: http://www.badmintonforum.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7867
someone finally voted for INA. is the general opinion for INA being so weak, or do we just don't have enough INA supporters in the forum?
I'm abstaining becoz my head says China and my heart says Denmark or Korea or Indonesia... and obviously, I never know whether to use my heart or head for stuff like that.
China all the way baby! cmon, you got a population of about a quarter of the world and you can't even win a cup?
lol, good one, TOmike! Since Malaysia is out......or maybe a miracle will happen? lol. Anyway, yeah, why can't China win? out of the billions there are some fantastic players, right?
Yeah, but really less than 1% of the population even participates competitively in sports cuz all the people there focus on studies . Here, in Canada, half my class plays hockey and others.
Less than 1%??? How do u know the number? I heard that in recent 5 yrs, badminton's popularity grew like crazy. In many major cities, thousands of ppl registered to be offical club members. In Gongzhou, there are about .25 millions official "badminton lovers" (regular club memebers), dated in year of 2000, now, will surely be more and more.
Okay, sorry, maybe my meaning of "competitively" may have been misconstrued. I don't mean the people who play in local circuits or clubs but rather the ones that play "pro," as the original message from TOmike was why can't they win the Sudirman Cup. For example, a check on World Badminton Online [\url], will show 37 ranked Malaysian players on the MS pro ciruit, while only 10 ranked Chinese MS players. Malaysia has nearly 4 times more ranked MS players than China even though it has only a tiny fraction of the population of China. My guestimate was only that, just a guestimate but to back my point, about 3 weeks ago, I was chatting with my cousin from China and he said that in senior high, most of the kids in his school don't even have time to participate in "fun" sports, let alone do anything competitively.
I see i see... Back then, when I was in China, about 10 yr ago, most kids have tons of HW to do everyday. Therefore, the "work out" time are greatly limited when compare to other nations. Sad to say, most kids when got selected into "physical ed. school/team" are the ones typically not very good at (or don't like) studying, even though, a lot of them are very smart to me. However, not quite sure about now days...
I think this poll should be disabled, as people are voting for it, despite it being for the last surdiman cup.
