I've been trying to smash with different types of handling the racket..my coach taught me to "panhandle" the racket...which means holding the racket like a fist...and some other people like frds and others told me NOT to panhandle...and told me to hold it normally and the thumb should not touch any other fingers. However, when i tried to NOT panhandle i seem to always slice the birdie and cannot hit it with the racket flat. Which tecnique is right and better? thx for helpping mee...and thx to commentss

It depends on where the shuttle is at the time of contact and where you want to place it. The grip is a 10% variation from true panhandle.

More important aspect is your positioning. Positioned directly behind the shot, you should be able to hit it hard and direct it where you want with your wrist. To be able to do that, you have to get ready before the shuttle is even hit by your opponent. That means anticipation, proper stance and proper footwork.

I tried hitting the birdie in front of me...standing sideways..and as I turn my body towards the birdie and hitting without panhanding..it seems hard and seems to have no power at all. When i tried pandhandling..it seems to be better. I am sure that my positioning and footword are correct and always ready to hit the birdie. Thanks for the help

Not too sideway. You don't wanna turn too much for a smash. When hitting the shot, relax your swing and try to 'slice' it:D, but maintain a firm grip at the point of contact. Your forearm will naturally pronate to hit the shuttle square on.

Search the technique forum for more details.

Have you played volleyball before? It's the same move as spiking the ball.
