Since we are all sports buffs, surely we have other sports that we like and follow! A few that I have been following. Cycling - what a mess in the men's road race. I was following the race at home and went nuts when the 2 leaders crashed in the home stretch. Many favorites were gone. Swimming - I used to skip watching Olympics swimming. After all, just the same 4 things in many different iterations. But since started doing a little bit of swimming that has stirred my interests. Mostly just admiring the speed humans can move in water. Coverage is hard to come by. A blessing or curse, there are live stream but due to similar time zone, most events happens during work hours. and then the TV coverage is total BS. Most of the time ended up watching replays from online.
other events that I will be following... a bit of track running + marathon, diving, triathlon, and of course, BADMINTON!
In Tennis my money is on Rafael Nadal, In Football Denmark,Portugal or Nigeria, In Badminton, Lin Dan is very good. In Table Tennis, it will be Ma Long or Zhang Zike.
what happened to Chinese gymnastics? they used to be really good in the old days of Li-Ning, etc. now they barely getting a bronze.
I agree the cycling race was a mess. I was rooting for the Italians aru and nibali, but one was not good enough on the day and nibali went down in the descent :/ Such a bad TV coverage, no time differences shown, no picture how nibali and montoya crashed... Looking good for our tennis ladies. Kerber about to advance to qf as well as did surprising Siegmund. Sad that both djokovic and muguruza gone... Even worse that Federer and Wawrinka miss due to injury :/ Table tennis was a catastrophe for the Germans! Boll and Dima played well under their capabilities. Others I'm interested a little more than just results are soccer and handball as long as Germany is in Unfortunately I have one more exam to go next Thursday But afterwards I will enjoy the Badminton event!!!
It is a good sign for China for not relying on gymnastics to produce gold. A truly strong sport nation needs golds from other field. China got at least 10 or more golds from diving, ping pong and badminton. China should aim for being a top three country without them.
Wow, Phelps just grabbed his 20th Oly gold medal. If the previous gold medalist of Beijing and London also continuing gold tradition here in Rio, a sign Lin Dan could do the same?
Indoor track cycling can be very exciting. I think it's still in the games. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would skip exams if I am you OLY is more important, once in every 4 years...exam you can retake again and again
Ladies cycling roadrace was very interesting, tactically. My kids and I were watching, live, when the leader, van Vleuten crashed horribly. I thought she was dead... or paralyzed. She's alive with 4 broken vertebra! A brave American was left alone in front, only to be caught and passed by three others only a few dozen meters from the line. 4 hours on a bike --a lot of it leading the pack up cruel hills -- only to be pipped at the post! Judo - I know nothing. But was entertained listening to the Aussie broadcaster be completely shocked when a 116th ranked Zambian knocked off one of the favourites. And was proud to see a very awkward Canadian make a spectacular win in overtime over another favourite. Last Olympics, I found netball strangely intriguing. Will be looking for it again.
Ukraine team pulled something out of the 2012 Olympics from badminton https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/bizarre-scene-unfolded-mens-gymnastics-144400741.html
i think the explanation is something like they are injured but the rule don't allow substitute so all they can do is to show up and give up the points.
Thus far only 47 countries have won medals till 10.8.2016. The rest of the countries not listed above have not won any medals yet. As usual USA tops the group thus far with 26 medals won in total. I believe that USA have the ability to top the total medals for Rio Olympics 2016. Interesting facts to note is that USA really have the ability to top the group for every Olympics they have participated.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volleyball_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_–_Women's_tournament#Pool_B USA vs CHN will happen on Monday 15 Aug at 4:30am (China time)!!! They made it so that very few people in China will or can watch it!!
Volleyball feaks will. well, count me one, I sure will. 3:30am my time. tonight China vs Puerto Rico.
A bit surprised CHN gymnastics underperform here, a sport they excel in. Agree that a true sporting power ought to be prominent in a wide range of sport and not rely overly on a few disciplines. Unfortunately, CHN has been weak in track and field events and still relatively weak in swimming though in the last one or two Olympics there's been some breakthroughs.
