Canadian Open 2012

For the 3rd year running, the Canadian Open GP will be held at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Yeah, we're still months away but this year's Canadian Open is the last event before the Olympics. Based on past history, do we normally find players who have qualified for the Olympics playing in the last tournament before it?

I suppose we'll see lots of 2nd tier players (those who didn't make the OG cut) and quite a few less stars this year. It will be a good opportunity for them to pick up ranking points.

Well, check it out. The U.S. Open was the same level in 2008. I don't think the 2004 Malaysia Open is a good guide. It was a 4* and it finished nearly a month and a half before Athens. Also, that year there were only 9 tournaments at 4 stars (essentially GP Gold) or above (including the cancelled Hong Kong Open), whereas now there are 24, plus the SS Finals. On the other hand, 2008 was before Yonex starting trying to entice their marquee players to the West Coast and before the Canada Open was paired with the U.S. Open. I think that could make for a better field than they had at OCBC in '08.

Vita marrisa/Mona Santoso and Dewi Komala/Jenna G are planning to be there....all are subject to when their visas can be issued.

Thanks, madbad!
I wonder if Toby, Michelle et al will check in at this year's Canadian Open. Maybe we should ask...

I'm sure they will eventually find this thread and let us know.

The bigger question... will YOU be here? :D

Errr, we'll let Toby play this time... :p
...but I'll try to turn up as an observer. I can't promise neutrality, though! :D

I believe you have a couple of meals to collect from me (talk about incentive, hehe :D)
Oh, that! ~*dismissive wave of hand*~ :D
I actually thought the time period for that had run out! You're a prince! :D
It's all still a while away, but I do hope I can make it. *sigh! Man proposes....

It's been a really fun the last 2 years and I'm sure you'll enjoy it to the hilt. You know where to find me...

There's an official website: http://www.canadaopen.ca/

I think most of the Canadian National Team will be playing, especially the ones going to London. I just noticed that Michelle Li and Alex Bruce withdrew from US Open, so I'm not exactly sure what is going on at the moment. However, there are some new partnerships at hand, with Adrian Liu partnering with up and coming youngsters Nyl Yakura (MD) and Christin Tsai (WD). Also, my brother, Derrick, and I will be partnering up in the MD for fun... so... I guess we'll see how siblings play together ;)

Hope to see everyone come out! :)

Pretty thin turnout compared to last year. But Nozomi Okuhara is on the list

But there is quality nonetheless.
Nozomi may not even win the title. She has to contend with Sayaka, who is on a roll.
And Yui Hashimoto has been recently playing well too, though I don't think she will be able to beat Nozomi.
The WD will most certainly go to Japan, (george@unisys has been coughing already th_Smiley_Camera-1.gif ),
as will likely the MD and XD.

Just realised not too long ago that this isn't a GPG event.
Nozomi's possible semi-final and final opponents:

A few Brazilians and Norwegians have withdrawn resulting in a bunch walkovers. Nozomi's opponent, Bayrak from Turkey is also a no show. As a result, no match for Noz tonight.

The draw looks like a Canadian Closed with a sprinkling of invitees from other countries.
