Chen Long ( 谌龙 )

Coincidentally and interestingly, at the Rio Olympics, the two Longs 龙 reign supreme:

Ma Long, 马龙, in Table Tennis

Chen Long, 谌龙, in Badminton

Hail the two Dragons !

Wang Shixian is wearing a LiNing cap.

I watched the replay of the gold medal match after watching it live, a habit of mine.

Apart from the match itself, the most moving scene was Chen Long, during his victory celebration, pointing to his girlfriend, Wang Shixian, blew kisses to her, made the sign of 'I love you', followed by two thumbs up with both hands. In return, WSX, face awash in tears of joy, responded with her thumbs up.

Heartwarming, I almost teared myself. Hope it made up for her heartbreaks at having missed two successive Olympics.

Chen Long's Rio OG 2016 triumphant looks alike Copenhagen WC 2014 story as he tremendously experienced the most diificult times of his badminton career after Thomas Cup failure, lots of criticism and lack of self-belief but he turns to be different player in individual prestigious event.

Li Yongbo moved to tears talking about Chen Long: cannot blame him for Team Championship losses

In the Rio Olympics Men's Singles Final, Chen Long withstood pressure to prevail over Lee CW to capture the MS Championship. Post match , Chinese badminton Head Coach Li Yongbo was moved to tears during the interview.

Li Yongbo when talking about Chen Long shouldering the burden these few years, was emotionally stirred. " Many people don't quite understand him, (in team events) after losing the match, many criticize him. But so many years now I've come to understand him a lot. He and Lin Dan are different. For Lin Dan, sometimes you've to criticize him a bit, need to be a bit harsh on him, but not to Chen Long. When Chen Long runs into a difficult situation, you've to help him, comfort him."

Chen Long won't be playing any tournaments next month, having just puled out of both the JPN Open and the KOR Open Superseries according to the latest BWF M & Q reports dated 26th Aug.

I suspect that wedding bells may be ringing very soon for Chen Long and Wang Shixian. That'll be lovely. Just speculating but we'll see.

England's leading newspaper Daily Mail criticises Chen Long for the 'Most over the Top Celebration' in the History of Olympic Games. Also mocks Lee chong Wei.

The news headline is facetious (not meant as a criticism):

Shouldn't the other guy be crying? Chinese badminton player's reaction to winning gold may be the most over the top Olympic celebration EVER!

The 27-year-old's priceless reaction came after Long defeated Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei to win his first ever gold medal.

[To me, Chen Long's Rio'16 celebration is as ecstatic, overwhelming and memorable as Lin Dan's London'12 who isn't as over-the-top as as his Beijing'08. Don't forget, Chen Long just months prior lost the Thomas Cup, his second debacle in his career, and his beloved girlfriend was deselected for the ROG'16, so we can imagine the pent-up emotions, the cumulative pressure and anxiety building up to immense relief and utter joy at having redeemed himself, fulfilled his promise and delivered when it mattered most , all coming together and released at one go, transporting him - Justin]

Difficult for him to peak again so soon after Rio, what with all the victory celebrations both at home and in Hong Kong. Good for him to have a good rest , spend some quality time with his family and WSX and recharge before training himself to peak again for next year's WC. Will be most happy if I can see him meet LCW and beat him again in the fourth consecutive biggie.

I think both LD and LXR were defeated in the immediate next tournament after london olympics, if i remember correctly. CL deserves his defeat too after all the hard work before and during Rio :)

For sure he will lose in one or two tournaments leading up to the next WC. I will be happy if he can play with the same kind of form as in the Olympics in a rematch with LCW.
