It is possible that his stem cell therapy may have contained steroids, as it seems that steroids boost the effectiveness of the stem cells. As reported in this scientific article in Apr 2014.

Performance-enhanced mesenchymal stem cells via intracellular delivery of steroids

Q.E.D.if stem cell is ameliorated by steroid.

Then whoever gave this naive boy the go ahead is in trouble.

I am not surprised. Since the rate of healing from MSC is very slow even though it is one of the main component in stem cells treatment (other than platelet), clinically only by means of using steroid can accelerate it's healing process. By only truly revealing what was used in Dato' stem cell treatment can give us a clear picture what procedure he was given (and i am not surprised if there is) and this will make things more interesting.

Or why did he nor BAM realize that perhaps they should've filed a TUE?

Simple. They messed up the pharmacokinetics estimates.

And also there's no TUE for dexamethasone for in competition as his thigh injury is not considered a medically threatening condition that requires treatment with steroids... unlike asthma, allergic reaction, arthritis, or even hemorrhoids... ;)

Sounds almost right. It is either he got the pharmacokinetics estimates wrong or he used some stuff unknowingly.

Risks were taken as a result of too much trust in someone and naivity on his part.

What a way to tarnish one's career despite contributing so much to the country.

Maybe not if the circumstances show that it wasn't international. There might be strong feelings for him - that he was cheated. As such, he can easily get a good position within BAM if he wants to. Business and government people would sympathize with him....if banned, it would not hurt him financially.. it just hastens his retirement.

Hopefully it is like that but however for any athlete who is linked with drugs regardless of whatever stories behind it is always not a pleasant thing to come into anyone ears alone if he is indeed banned because of it. Something that you wouldn't want to attach in your resume once you've decided to retire.

I don't think the Dato needs a resume. His background and achievement are on Wikipedia. :D

I reckon that's why the surprise. This is not the 1st time he went thru stem cell treatment.
Remember, ions ago, LCW had thigh, ankle injury? His right leg was always full of straps. He opted for stem cell treatment for that. Cause it was either that or surgery.

Then, there was the Achilles surgery, also same, there was stem cell injection involved. All this while no problem in dope test.
LCW did rest longer though - 2 months from the thigh injury, Achilles... how many months was that?? I remember it was faster than the usual 6 months

Pretty sure it wasnt his Achilles tendon...if you mean his pre-OG injury, that was a torn ligament in his ankle. Achilles tendon is only operated on when it's torn, or inflamed chronically.
Although I think he had a longer break after his first stem cell treatment, so there may not even have been a difference...

So it would be 4th or 5th of november then..

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Sunday confirmed one of its shuttlers failed a dope test but stopped short of naming him as Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Chong Wei's name had been widely reported as the shuttler in question. Chong Wei won bronze at the recent Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

BAM's announcement on Sunday was made by deputy president Datuk Norza Zakaria after an emergency council meeting to discuss the issue.

At a press conference after the meeting, Norza declined to reveal any names until the "B" sample results are out.

It was the first official announcement made by officials from the association regarding the doping issue.

The BAM has withheld naming the shuttler until confirmation of tests of the "B" sample expected to be carried out on Nov 4 or Nov 5 at a lab in Oslo, Norway.

Consent form can be overcome in some cases. It depends if the person administering the treatment gives the correct information. For instance, a person might just be asked to sign a consent form without being explained properly the implications. Then, the consent is deemed less valid. A lot of consent forms require a witness signature but that is very institutional dependent.

    Pulled out of HK Open.

The HK fans will be disappointed. He's very popular here.
