[Photo courtesy of CSCLF] The Reid Cup International Youth Badminton Friendship Competition 2019 opened on Tuesday in Chengdu in southwestern China's Sichuan province. Some 130 teenage badminton players are participating in this seven-day event featuring not only sports competition, but also cultural communications. Regarding the role badminton plays in promoting cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world, this competition aims to act as a platform for teenagers of different cultural backgrounds to boost sportsmanship as well as to develop friendship. A total of 12 teams from China (including Hong Kong and Macao), South Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, France, Germany and Uzbekistan attended the opening ceremony, during which Wang Jiarui, chairman of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), announced its official launch. Jing Dunquan, vice president of the CSCLF, awarded souvenir badges to the All-China Sports Federation, the Chengdu Municipal People's Government, Dujiangyan Municipal People's Government and the Chinese Badminton Association at the opening ceremony. Among the keynote speeches at the ceremony, Tang Jiuhong, deputy secretary general of the CSCLF, spoke on the positive impact of sports on society. "As the global language, sports embody friendship and unity, peace and justice, as well as respect and solicitude," Tang said, "I hope teenagers around the world will build connections through badminton, getting a broader view of each other's culture, enhancing mutual understanding, and further making contributions to global development." Recognizing All-China Sports Federation's efforts in promoting quality sports contests for teenagers, Li Lingwei, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, expressed her hope the Chengdu participants could give full play to their strength during competition, and promote further development of the sport. Hosted by the CSCLF and the All-China Sports Federation, the competition is organized by Chengdu Municipal People's Government and Chinese Badminton Association; and sponsored by the Reid Group.
