Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 29-Sep-2013 (A Short Report)

Here is a short report for our Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 29-Sep-2013.

We thank trainees for removing themselves from our 'Booking List' when unable to attend; therefore opening up vacancies for new trainees wishing to join us.

Reminder :
If you are unable to attend, kindly remove your name ASAP so that others can replace you, otherwise you will be fined. Why? Because there could other CCCers wishing to attend (checking to book in - up to the last hours), but finding themselves missing out after we have FULL HOUSE. And MSAC charges the court fees if we cancel our courts within 24 hours before our session starts.

At this session, we trained to improve our 'Overhead Dropshot' (Chapter 4 listed in Post #1).

Some points to remember :
* 'Point of Impact' should be taken at about 11 o’clock (for the shuttlecock to travel flatter).
* In order to have your 'Point of Impact' to be at about 11 o’clock, faster footwork is required (to move yourself into position to play the shot).
* At 'Point of Impact', concentrate on and/or know how far you are from the net (to know how much power to use).
* The 'Point of Impact' should be taken higher (the 'Jumping Overhead Dropshot' could be used).
* etc, etc, ......

If trainees are still not understanding the lesson taught, please ask me questions next session (to give you info/demo that you require).

Comments on our 5 attending trainees:
* Chong-S is still having problems with her 'Footwork'. But when able to get into position, her 'Overhead Dropshot' is better than our other 4 trainees.
* Wei-C is having problems with her 'Point of Impact'. Very often, it is hit at about 12 o’clock.
* Tracy-T is doing well. Most times, she is able to keep her 'Overhead Dropshot' flat.
* Mario-P needs to have his 'Point of Impact' higher. Perhaps the 'Jumping Overhead Dropshot' is best to be used.
* WaiKin-Y needs to soften his power for this stroke. Often, he is doing a 'Slow Smash'.

ASEAN Games Australia after our Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 29-Sep-2013

Some trainees had a look at the ASEAN Games Australia after our Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 29-Sep-2013.

The Men's events

It was a rather sociable ASEAN Games Australia 2013 for Malaysian badminton player Daniel Wu as he successfully defended his men’s singles title, but couldn’t do the same for his doubles title. Leon Saw reports.

ASEAN Games Australia 2012 badminton men’s singles champion, Daniel Wu, successfully defended his title by overcoming compatriot, Clement Ho, in the finals, 21 – 10, 21 – 19.

The 22-year-old Malaysian, an aviation student at Swinburne University of Technology, had a stellar run to the finals, only dropping a set in his semi-final match.

As expected, Daniel had the momentum in the first set of the finals, while Clement struggled to build any and lost 21 – 10. Clement put up more of a fight in the second set though, pressuring Daniel throughout the set and pushing him right to the very end. However, it was Daniel’s day and he pipped Clement to the post 21 – 19, winning his second ASEAN Games Australia badminton men’s singles title.

Although it seemed like Daniel had a relatively easy time on the court this year, he insisted it was anything but.

“It was definitely harder than last year,” he said.

“This year’s competition was harder because there were some really good players from Philippines in the tournament.”

Not that he was out to win.

“I’m just here to socialise,” he said.

“You know, see all my friends, and meet new people.”

While Daniel’s singles title defence was a success, he couldn’t recapture his ASEAN Games Australia badminton men’s doubles title. Clement and Roy Tan wrested it from him and his partner, Paul Lee, in a thrilling three-set match, 21 – 8, 15 – 21, 22 – 20.

The match went right down to the wire with both teams winning a set each and trading point for point during the third set, before Clement and Roy ultimately prevailed in a tiebreak.

Still, Daniel was philosophical about the loss.

“It’s alright,” he said.

“We’re all friends here and it’s just for fun.”

“I play with these guys at least three times a week anyway,” he added.

The Women’s and Mixed events

Thailand’s Varaporn Techavinyoonont took out the women’s singles title and then with partner Christina Chai, the doubles one.

The mixed doubles event was a Vietnamese show with two Vietnamese teams battling for the title.

In the end, the team of Huong Vang and Tuan Le beat An Pham and Hop Nguyen, 21 – 15, 21 – 9.

At this session, we trained to improve our 'Overhead Shots using the Forehand Strokes from our Backhand Corner'.

Some points to remember :
* 'Overhead Shots using the Forehand Strokes from your Backhand Corner' can be executed whenever you have the correct footwork.
* 'Overhead Shots using the Backhand Strokes from your Backhand Corner' is usually caused by 'lazy footwork'.
* We spent much time working on our footwork.
