Your last sentence - upper body or lower body?

upper body. the whole stroke would be an overhead stroke like a clear or a smash complete with a scissor step. the scissor step by itself is simple enough, the issue has always been the upper body.

Oh ok, so you are thinking it’s my upper body movement ( or lack there of) that is my main issue ?

i mean the throwing motion. the correct throwing motion is something you can rely on as a guide to correct your overhead motion, when you have no access to coaching.

Ok, would you recommend I practice throwing a tennis ball or actual shuttles ?

throw a shuttle from baseline to clear the net. the shuttle being light, will give you instant feedback to the quality of your throw. ease into it so you dont injure yourself. there are a few videos on youtube on throwing shuttles, tagoken is one that comes to mind. pay attention to the trunk rotation, the elbow position, the use of the index finger when the shuttle leaves the hand. (the two fingers that are not involved in the throw, ring and pinkie are the ones that primarily grip the racket, cheung had mentioned that previously though not in the context of the throw).

I had some improvement in my stroke. I feel like I used less wrist flexion and more of my overall body. I was happy with most of my game play. I did notice that my basic footwork patterns are not being used. For example from going to the middle of the court to the backhand rear corner I am not doing a proper split step and it’s slowing me down a lot. I also need to work on my serves and service returns

I would also recommend throwing a tennis ball as well. Try throwing it down a line. For example, stand on the centre line of the badminton court at the baseline and throw the tennis ball above the net to the other end of the court along the centre line to the baseline.

You might find you need to steady your lower and upper body to make it more accurate. This translates to increasing efficiency of your smash to one direction (forwards).

Throwing action/motion applies with or without a coach. The overhead action/motion is a throwing action/motion.

the scissor thing you mention is called scissor kick .

You are saying something about a scissor kick.

But What do you mean by "unit" there?

5 years of recoding my games and best shots. Trying to make little improvements each week over the last 5 years. Overall I played well, better shot selection , better defense
thank you for those that have helped me here

    Good stuff

Curious as to why you don't push up on receiving serve to try to take the shuttle above the net? Worried about getting flicked?

Yes I’m worried about the flick. But I do feel I’m in a position now that I can try to start a little bit closer to the net and work on receiving serves from a little closer to the net.

I think you're close enough where you're standing but you're waiting for the shuttle to come to you instead of moving forwards to attack it.

The usual thing is to commit to push forwards to attack the serve a few times and not worry about getting flicked. It doesn't have to be every time you receive, you can hang back a bit if the server starts cottoning on to it. Even pros get caught out with flicks.

I think you're fast enough to recover often enough to attack the serve. There are players slower than you that do it well.

The benefits of attacking the serve typically outweigh the negatives of getting caught with a flick once or twice in a game.

It doesn't have to be a hard attack either, the earlier and higher you take the shuttle the more options you'll have to go flat, sideways, or create the lift from a tight net shot.
